My mother taught me the art of expression through dance. My wife taught me the ultimate expression of the gift of family with our four children. As a radiologist by profession, and a teacher and artist by nature my daily pursuits are driven by the powerful need to create beauty from the mundane. I combine my academic career in cardiovascular and abdominal imaging with a passion for creativity, the outlet depending upon the season. The fall and winter months find me at the reading board and the computer, creating unique and memorable images from radiologic films. During the warmth of spring and summer my passions spill into the garden, where nature teaches me truth. I use the lessons of nature to combine reality with fantasy by creating sculptures from natural elements in minimalist combination in the setting of the garden and sounds of water. My endeavors in family, dance, art, medicine, education, and the garden have kept me inspired and fulfilled.

Garden Show
She was known as the “Pink Lady” when she sported a shocking pink exterior with a shabby and shaded back garden, eroded over the years with a scraggly hill behind the house. A trip to Machu Picchu, with a peek at the splendid results of vertical agriculture in the mountains, forever changed the backyard. The hillock, now terraced with mostly hidden rock supports, is packed to the brim with variably topped small evergreens, perrenials and annuals positioned to make the viewer feel like the centre of attention in this small garden. Two waterfalls consolidate the garden. The larger consists of two 7-foot-high splashes that are part of a rock sculpture called “From Generation to Generation,” depicting the Children of Israel at Mount Sinai and dedicated to our parents. The second is a smaller and gentler waterfall that is fed by a winding rivulet that starts at the top of the garden, meanders gently under the maples and is banked by lush and varied vegetation. In the garden mingle a host of personalities – the stick man with his yapping dog, a man and women in passionate conversation, couples seeking peace in the garden, a monk in meditation, a torso taking a walk, and two Swazi men looking to the heavens for their inspiration.
The front garden flourishes in fantasy with sun-loving annuals, perennials and diminutive alpines and evergreens. Colorful hand-painted flowers surround the window frames, even of the tiny playhouse that rests beside the main carriage house. Clematis scales the telephone poles, and imaginative containers including a Spanish bench and antique grape-pickers’ carts are home to herbs and bright-colored blooms. Hundreds of rose blossoms climb into the upstairs bedroom windows in May and June. The fragrant garden spills onto the sidewalk where roses and swishing ornamental grasses 7 feet tall envelop passers by, giving cause to slow down and breathe deeply for a few moments of inner peace and contemplation along the side roads of this beautiful garden city.
